    • Thomas and the Mutch family travelled from Sydney to Broulee by coastal steamer. They moved on and found their first work at the Mort Estates at Bodalla. They then moved on to find Uncle Joe (Joseph Mutch). Thomas went to work on "Corrawong" for Mr James O'Hare, where he learnt to be a blade shearer. Hannah Mutch found work as a nurse maid at Bombala. After Thomas and Hannah were married, Thomas worked for a while at "Cathcart" and then for the McKeachie brothers at Mount Cooper as a farm labourer. From there he returned to Delegate where he was employed as a shepherd on the Campbell run "Deligate".
In 1876 Thomas's name appears as a Selector; it was then that he took up "Bertery Banks" and several adjoining blocks. He was later disposessed of many of these blocks by trickery but "Bertery Banks" survived
