    • In 1832 Richard Millington Perks and his wife Ann, after receiving a letter from their son Josiah George Swift Perks, petitioned the then Home Secretary, Viscount Melbourne for the sentence imposed on their son be remitted from transportation for life to transportation to 7 or even 14 years so that there would be a probability of him returning to take the trade of the petitioner, which he would at any time give up to him. The petition was refused.
